Located in a striking spot sixty metres above the city of Salzburg, on the steeply sloping cliffs of Monchsberg, and with some 2,300 m! of exhibition space, the Museum der Moderne provides the perfect backdrop for considering the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Now – for the first time in 15 years in Austria – the Museum is presenting a wide- ranging overview of the later work of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Over 50 sculptures, 30 paintings and a similar number of graphic pieces from Giacometti’s final two decades of creative work are being shown using special exhibition architecture, offering a multifaceted insight into the fascinating oeuvre of the man widely viewed as one of the most significant artists and sculptors of the 20th century.

The exhibition is showing key parts of Giacometti’s main work, in dose connection with pieces from international museum and private collections and the estate of the man himself. Numerous loans from the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti, Paris are at the heart of the exhibition.

Alberto Giacometti is also associated with photography in a way unlike any other artist of the twentieth century, and together with the exhibition “Alberto Giacometti. Der Ursprung des Raumes ”, the MdM Monchsberg is showing an exhibition of photographs featuring his work in cooperation with the Fotostiftung Schweiz (Winterthur). These provide an intimate record of creative life in his studio, including his paintings and sculptures during the creative process and in their finished form, their models, and of course the great man actually at work.
